Commander of the Finnish Navy, Rear Admiral Tuomas Tiilikainen visits RMC
Commander of the Finnish Navy, Rear Admiral Tuomas Tiilikainen with his team visited the Rauma Shipyard on Monday, 12 February, on the invitation of shipbuilding company Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC). RMC is building four multi-role corvettes for the Finnish Navy, with the production of the first corvette started at the end of October 2023.
During the visit, Rear Admiral Tiilikainen familiarised himself with the operations of the shipyard, discussed the Squadron 2020 project with the company management, and observed the assembly of the first block in the multi-purpose hall as well as part fabrication in steel production.
“The visit was useful and offered Commander of the Finnish Navy the opportunity for familiarisation with the building process of our corvettes and for discussions with the shipyard management on future cooperation stages. The meeting with the RMC management highlighted the increasingly closer cooperation as the project progresses. To observe the actual building of the blocks for the first vessel was particularly rewarding and interesting. For the Finnish Navy, it is necessary that the vessels be constructed according to specifications and on schedule” explains Commander of the Finnish Navy, Rear Admiral Tuomas Tiilikainen.
The multi-role corvettes are built in the new multi-purpose hall specifically constructed for this project. The hall offers excellent conditions for the production with guaranteed safety, security, and quality. RMC has also made considerable investments in steel production to facilitate more efficient handling of the materials used in the building of the multi-role corvettes.
“The visit of Commander of the Finnish Navy Tuomas Tiilikainen strengthens our cooperation and the significance of good relations for the project and the shipyard. During the meeting, we discussed the progress of the project and the needs for knowledge over the entire lifecycle of the product. This project builds up and restores the expertise in and the production machinery for the construction of military vessels as a significant part of the overall capabilities of the Rauma Shipyard, says the CEO and President of RMC, Mr. Mika Nieminen.
